Why Shopify?

Why Move from Squarespace to Shopify?

Squarespace is a beautiful way to build a website — but it is a design platform first and an ecommerce platform second. As your store grows, the commerce layer starts to show its limits: basic inventory, a tiny extensions marketplace and a checkout you cannot improve. Shopify is built for selling from the ground up.

Built for Serious Ecommerce

Squarespace treats the store as one block among many. Shopify is commerce-first: every part of the platform — from inventory to analytics to checkout — is built around helping you sell more.

A Full Commerce App Ecosystem

Squarespace Extensions number in the dozens; Shopify's App Store has thousands — best-in-class tools for reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, email and support that simply have no Squarespace equivalent.

Room to Grow

Larger catalogues, higher traffic, international selling, wholesale — things that strain a Squarespace store are routine on Shopify, so you will not need to migrate twice.

Proper Inventory & Order Management

Multi-location inventory, proper order workflows, staff permissions and real commerce reporting — Shopify gives your team operational tools well beyond Squarespace's store panel.

Better Checkout Experience

Shopify's checkout — with Shop Pay and one-click purchasing — is widely regarded as the highest-converting in ecommerce. Squarespace's checkout is fixed, cannot be optimised, and only supports a narrow set of payment providers.

Squarespace vs Shopify: Which Platform is Right for Your Business?

Squarespace and Shopify are both excellent platforms — at different jobs. Squarespace is the best-in-class way to build a beautiful, content-led website with a shop attached; Shopify is a commerce engine with everything built around selling. Which is right depends on which of those describes your business — here is an honest comparison.

Cost & Maintenance

Squarespace pricing is simple and low, with everything bundled into one plan — genuinely great value for a content site with a small shop. Watch the detail though: lower plans add a transaction fee on sales, and the indirect costs show up later as missing commerce features and the eventual re-platform when the store outgrows the site.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify costs more per month at entry level, but the commerce fundamentals — inventory, shipping, tax, analytics, checkout — are included and built to a far deeper standard, with no transaction fees when using Shopify Payments. Verdict: Squarespace on simplicity and price for content-first sites; Shopify on value once selling is the point.

Ease of Management

Squarespace's editor is a joy for design and content — pages, blogs and portfolios stay effortless. Store management is where it thins out: bulk product edits, order workflows and inventory management are basic compared to a dedicated commerce platform.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify's admin is built around running a store day to day: fast product management, clean order processing, real staff permissions and a mobile app you can genuinely run the business from. Verdict: Squarespace for building a beautiful site; Shopify for running a store.

Performance

Squarespace hosting is managed and reliable, but its image-rich templates can weigh pages down and you have limited technical control to optimise beyond what the platform allows.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify runs on commerce-grade infrastructure with a global CDN, and Online Store 2.0 themes are performance-optimised by default — Black Friday scale traffic is routine. Verdict: Shopify, especially as catalogue size and traffic grow.

Checkout and Conversion

Squarespace's checkout is clean but fixed — you cannot customise the flow, payment options are limited to a narrow set of providers, and there is no accelerated wallet bringing returning shoppers with saved details to your store.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify's checkout is widely regarded as the highest-converting in ecommerce, and Shop Pay's one-click purchasing measurably lifts completion rates versus standard guest checkout. Verdict: Shopify, clearly — for most stores this difference alone justifies the move.

Apps and Integrations

Squarespace Extensions is a small marketplace measured in dozens of tools, mostly around shipping, accounting and marketing basics. Category-leading ecommerce apps for subscriptions, loyalty and support largely do not exist for Squarespace.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify's App Store has thousands of commerce apps, and it is the first platform every serious ecommerce tool builds for — Recharge, Okendo, Gorgias, LoyaltyLion and their peers treat Shopify as home turf. Verdict: Shopify, decisively.

SEO

Squarespace handles the basics cleanly and its blogging tools are genuinely strong for content SEO. Product pages are weaker: store URLs follow fixed /shop/ patterns and product structured data is more limited — and every store URL changes when you migrate, which is why redirect mapping matters.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify handles the technical fundamentals — sitemaps, canonical tags, product structured data, redirects — reliably out of the box, with stronger support for rich results on product pages. Verdict: Squarespace holds its own for content; Shopify wins for product SEO, and a properly mapped migration protects both.

Scalability

Squarespace works well up to a point — but larger catalogues, complex variants, international selling and wholesale push against real platform limits, and there is no enterprise commerce tier to grow into.
Shopify Green Icon
Shopify scales from first sale to Shopify Plus without re-platforming — the same store grows into multi-currency, B2B and high-volume trading. Verdict: Shopify; migrating once, properly, beats migrating twice.

Choose Squarespace

If your site is content-first — a portfolio, studio, restaurant or publication — and the shop is a sideline, Squarespace's design quality and simplicity are genuinely hard to beat.

Choose Shopify

If ecommerce is your business — or you want it to be — Shopify gives you the checkout, the app ecosystem, the operational tools and the headroom to grow without ever migrating again.

Our Process

Our Squarespace to Shopify Migration Process

Every migration is planned carefully to minimise disruption, protect performance and make the move to Shopify as smooth as possible.

Discovery & Migration Planning

We audit your current Squarespace site — products, content, features, URL patterns and SEO — then create a migration plan tailored to your business, including a full URL redirect map and a content plan for anything Squarespace will not export cleanly.

Migration & Store Build

We migrate your products, customers and key data into Shopify, while refining the structure, design and overall user experience of the new store.

Launch & Growth

Before launch, we test the store, redirects and integrations thoroughly. Once live, we support the transition and help ensure everything is running smoothly.

Ready to Move to Shopify?

Whether you need a straightforward migration or a more complete redesign alongside it, we can help you make the move with confidence.

FAQ

Squarespace to Shopify Migration FAQs

How long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?

Most Squarespace to Shopify migrations take between 4 and 8 weeks from kick-off to launch. Squarespace stores are often design-led with rich content, so the timeline usually depends less on catalogue size and more on how much of the site's content and design needs rebuilding to the same standard on Shopify. Your Squarespace site stays live and trading throughout.

Will I lose my SEO rankings when migrating from Squarespace to Shopify?

Not if the migration is handled correctly. Squarespace store URLs follow fixed /shop/ patterns and blog URLs follow their own structure, so most URLs will change when you move to Shopify. We map every existing URL to its Shopify equivalent with one-to-one 301 redirects, carry across your page titles and meta descriptions, and test everything before launch — so search engines treat the new store as a continuation of your existing site. Squarespace sites often have strong content SEO, and we make protecting that a priority.

What data can be migrated from Squarespace to Shopify?

We migrate your product catalogue including variants, images, descriptions and pricing, along with customer records, order history, blog posts and site content, plus your key SEO data with redirects from every old URL. Worth knowing: Squarespace's exports are partial — products and orders export to CSV, but some content blocks, galleries and page layouts do not export at all and need rebuilding by hand. We handle that as part of the migration and flag anything site-specific during the audit.

Will my customers need to reset their passwords after the migration?

Yes — this is a standard part of any Squarespace to Shopify migration and applies regardless of who carries out the work. Customer account passwords are stored as encrypted hashes in Squarespace and cannot be transferred to Shopify for security reasons. Shopify handles this smoothly: customers are prompted to set a new password on their first login, and we help you plan the communication so it causes minimal friction.

Do I need to replace my Squarespace features and extensions on Shopify?

Yes, but almost always for the better. Squarespace's built-in features — forms, email campaigns, scheduling, member areas — map to Shopify apps that are typically deeper and better supported, and the Shopify App Store's options for reviews, subscriptions and loyalty are the strongest in ecommerce. We audit what your site actually uses during discovery and recommend the right Shopify equivalent for each, so nothing important gets left behind.

How much does a Squarespace to Shopify migration cost?

Squarespace to Shopify migrations with Futur Media start from £2,500 for a standard migration covering products, customers, orders and full 301 redirect mapping. Complex migrations — large catalogues, content-heavy sites needing manual rebuilds, or custom functionality — start from £6,000. Every project is quoted at a fixed price after a migration audit, so there are no surprises.

Is migrating to Shopify worth it for AI commerce and future visibility?

Increasingly, yes. Shopify stores get native infrastructure for AI commerce channels — including ChatGPT product discovery and Perplexity Shopping — without additional setup. Squarespace stores have limited product structured data built in, which makes appearing in AI-powered shopping results harder without custom work. If AI-driven discovery matters to your growth plans, Shopify currently offers the more direct route.

What is the difference between using a migration app and hiring an agency?

Migration apps automate the transfer of basic data — products, customers and orders — but they do not handle redirects, SEO preservation, design or post-launch testing. For Squarespace moves the design side matters more than usual: much of a Squarespace site's value is in its look and content, and that has to be rebuilt thoughtfully on Shopify rather than copied by a tool. An agency migration covers the full picture: data, SEO, a storefront that matches your design standard, integrations and launch support.
